Stencil AI vs TattooStencilPro
Both apps turn a reference image into a tattoo stencil. Stencil AI does it in three styles, lets you retouch the result, prints it at true size, and runs on every platform. TattooStencilPro is an iPad-first converter with one listed mode and, as of this writing, no published price.
Stencil AI is used by 5,000+ paying tattoo artists, holds 4.7 stars from 220+ US App Store ratings, and is built and quality-checked by working tattoo artists.
Written by the Stencil AI team; we make one of the two apps compared here. Every TattooStencilPro statement comes from its App Store listing and website, checked on 2026-10-01. Where its listing says nothing, the table says “Not listed” rather than guessing.
The short answer
- Stencil AI is the more complete tool. Three conversion styles, a retouch editor, true-to-size and multi-stencil printing, warp-to-body, LiDAR measuring, a session viewer, a 1,000+ subject library, studio seats, and 16 languages. TattooStencilPro lists image import, AI-assisted conversion and export.
- Stencil AI runs everywhere. iPhone, iPad, Android and the web on one account. TattooStencilPro is Apple-only and needs iOS 17.6.
- Stencil AI's price is public. From $13.99 a month. TattooStencilPro does not publish a price on its listing or its site, so we cannot compare on cost.
Feature by feature
The bottom line: a converter with one mode handles bold line art. The test is a portrait, where the tattoo is the shadow. Stencil AI's Hatching style keeps the shadow planes and renders them as printable cross-hatching; TattooStencilPro's listing does not say how it treats shading at all.

What TattooStencilPro has going for it
- It is simple. Import, convert, export. If that is the whole job and you work on an iPad, a single-mode converter is not a bad thing.
- Its listing states that user data is not used to train AI models. Stencil AI makes the same commitment in its privacy policy, but TattooStencilPro puts it in the store description, which is a fair thing to credit.
Where the output differs
A single conversion pass is enough for lettering, tribal and bold geometric work. The moment the reference has mid-tones, a converter has to decide what to do with them. Flatten them and a cheekbone becomes a blob. Blur them and the hair disappears. Stencil AI's Hatching style renders mid-tones as cross-hatching, so the structure of a portrait or fur survives into a print-ready stencil, and its Outline and Standard styles cover the simpler references without running a realism engine over a piece of lettering.
TattooStencilPro describes its conversion as AI-assisted line and detail detection. We will not guess at how it handles shading. Put one difficult portrait through both apps and look at the eyes.
What happens after the conversion
This is where the two apps diverge most. In Stencil AI the stencil is a starting point: retouch it with brushes and tone curves, remove a fill with a tap, bend it to a shoulder with the Warp tool, measure the placement on skin with LiDAR, place three stencils on one sheet at their real sizes, then print at true size or export a PDF. In Tattoo Mode the screen stays awake at the chair. TattooStencilPro's listing ends at “export or save stencils for printing”.
Platforms and price
TattooStencilPro is iPad and iPhone only ("iPad-first" per its listing) and needs iOS 17.6 or later, in English only. Stencil AI runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and web, in 16 languages, on one account, so an Android tablet at the station or a desktop between clients changes nothing.
On price we can only report our own side: Stencil AI starts at $13.99 a month on the Hobby plan, $29.99 on Pro, monthly or yearly. TattooStencilPro's App Store listing shows no in-app purchases and its website carries no pricing, as of 2026-10-01. If that changes we will update this page.
What artists say about Stencil AI's output
“Saves me SOOOO much time tracing out the designs. And the stencils are exactly how I would picture them if I would of done it myself”
“Top. Super präzise und schnell”
Common questions
Is TattooStencilPro the same as Stencil AI?
No. They are separate apps from separate companies. Stencil AI is made by Stencil Labs and is the app at stencilai.app; TattooStencilPro is a different app published under the name Darwin Enriquez. Both convert images to stencils, which is where the similarity ends.
What does Stencil AI do that TattooStencilPro does not list?
Three conversion styles instead of one, a retouch editor with brushes and tone curves, true-to-size printing with several stencils per sheet, warping a stencil to a shoulder or arm before printing, LiDAR measurement of the placement area, a session viewer for the chair, a library of 1,000+ ready-made subjects, studio seats for teams, 16 languages, and Android and web versions on the same account.
How much does TattooStencilPro cost?
As of 2026-10-01 its App Store listing shows no in-app purchases and its website shows no price, so we cannot tell you. Stencil AI's prices are public: Hobby from $13.99 a month, Pro from $29.99 a month.
Does TattooStencilPro work on Android?
No. It is iPad and iPhone only ("iPad-first" per its listing) and needs iOS 17.6 or later. Stencil AI runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and web.
Which is better for portraits and realism?
Stencil AI has a dedicated Hatching style that renders the tonal map of a portrait as cross-hatching dense enough to print. TattooStencilPro lists one AI-assisted mode and does not describe how it handles shading. Run the same portrait through both and compare the eyes and the shadow edges; that settles it faster than any table.
