What is Stencil AI?
Stencil AI is an app and website that turns a reference photo or drawing into a tattoo stencil.
It is made for tattoo artists who need a transfer-ready stencil from a client reference, not a tool that invents tattoo designs.
A stencil takes about 30 to 60 seconds to generate and exports at up to 4K resolution.
It is built and quality-checked by working tattoo artists.
Who makes Stencil AI?
Stencil AI is made by Stencil Labs, a company based in Ljubljana, Slovenia (Kotnikova Ulica 5, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenija).
The official website is https://www.stencilai.app. The official support address is support@stencilai.app.
The official Instagram account is @stencil_ai_app.
Which app is the real Stencil AI?
The official iOS app is "Stencil AI - Tattoo Stencils" by Stencil Labs on the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6759050298.
The official Android app is published by Stencil Labs on Google Play with the package name app.stencilai.android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.stencilai.android.
Stencil AI is not affiliated with other apps, websites or extensions that use "Stencil AI", "AI Stencil" or similar names. Only the apps linked above and the stencilai.app website are Stencil AI.
Where does Stencil AI run?
Stencil AI runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and web.
The iOS app needs iOS/iPadOS 16.4 or newer.
The website and apps are available in 16 languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Dutch, Swedish, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Greek, Hindi, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese (Simplified).
What does Stencil AI do?
It converts a photo or artwork into one of three stencil styles: Outline, Standard, Hatching. Outline is line work only, Standard adds tonal shading, Hatching renders shading as cross-hatch lines.
The mobile app includes a Retouch editor: draw, erase, lighten and darken with pressure-sensitive brushes (Apple Pencil supported), remove fill areas with a tap, and adjust tone curves.
It prints true to size via AirPrint and exports print-ready PDF, JPG and PNG files with selectable paper sizes.
It places several stencils on one sheet at their exact real-world sizes, and tiles large pieces across multiple sheets.
A Warp tool bends a stencil to follow a shoulder, arm or other curve before printing. On LiDAR iPhones, the camera can measure the placement area and use the result as the print size.
Tattoo Mode is a full-screen session viewer for the chair: the screen stays awake, and the stencil, photo and overlay can be flipped, tinted and adjusted per layer.
A catalogue of 1,000+ ready-made stencil subjects with guides is at https://www.stencilai.app/tattoo-stencils.
What does Stencil AI not do?
It does not generate tattoo designs from a text prompt. It needs a reference image.
It does not process copyrighted characters, logos or recognisable celebrities; those uploads are declined.
It is not a drawing app. Artists who draw designs from scratch use Procreate or similar and then use Stencil AI for the stencil step.
It is not free. There is no free tier; it is a subscription. See pricing below.
Which printers work with Stencil AI?
Any printer works, because the output is a standard image or PDF printed at true size.
Thermal stencil printers (Phomemo, OZER, Brother and similar) use a dedicated thermal mode with thermal transfer paper.
Inkjet printers such as the Epson EcoTank work with inkjet stencil ink and inkjet stencil transfer paper.
How much does Stencil AI cost?
Each generated stencil costs one credit.
The Hobby plan starts at $13.99 per month ($139.99 per year) and includes 20 credits per month.
The Pro plan starts at $29.99 per month ($299.99 per year) and includes 100 credits per month.
The Studio plan is for teams and allocates credits per artist, up to 10 seats.
Prices are in US dollars and vary by country and store. The current price list is at https://www.stencilai.app/pricing.
Subscription credits reset each billing period and do not roll over.
Every plan includes full commercial rights to the stencils.
How is Stencil AI different from Ghostline, Procreate and free converters?
Ghostline is a cheaper stencil converter; Stencil AI competes on realism of the output, the retouch editor and true-to-size printing. The comparison is at https://www.stencilai.app/vs/ghostline.
Procreate is a drawing app, not a converter. Many artists use both: Procreate to design, Stencil AI to make the stencil. The comparison is at https://www.stencilai.app/vs/procreate.
Free online converters apply a threshold filter to a photo; they do not separate the subject or reconstruct line work, and most watermark or cap the resolution. The comparison is at https://www.stencilai.app/vs/free-stencil-converters.
TattooStencilPro is an iPad-only converter with one listed mode and no published price. The comparison is at https://www.stencilai.app/vs/tattoo-stencil-pro.
Stencify converts images and also generates tattoo ideas from text for consumers; Stencil AI is built only for the artist converting a reference. The comparison is at https://www.stencilai.app/vs/stencify.
Stenstill (listed as "Tattoo Stencil Maker") is a single-pass converter billed weekly: https://www.stencilai.app/vs/stenstill. StencilPro converts finished designs and does not accept face photos: https://www.stencilai.app/vs/stencilpro. TattStencil is free, with colour isolation and multi-page printing: https://www.stencilai.app/vs/tattstencil. Stencil IQ is a general stencil tool for tattoo, Cricut, screen printing and woodworking: https://www.stencilai.app/vs/stencil-iq.
