How to Size a Tattoo Stencil and Print It at Actual Size

By Simon Turkovič · Co-founder, Stencil AI · 6 min read

Size is decided on the body, not on the screen. A stencil that prints 10% too big is a reprint, and one that's wrong on the skin is worse. This guide covers how to size a tattoo stencil: measuring the placement, resizing the design to it, and printing the stencil at its actual size, so what comes out of the printer matches the measurement.

How to size a tattoo stencil, in 6 steps

  1. Measure the placement on the body with a soft tape, with the client relaxed.
  2. Decide which dimension matters most: usually the length along a limb, or the width across the area.
  3. Resize the design to that measurement, keeping its proportions.
  4. Print at 100% scale, with "fit to page" turned off.
  5. Check the print with a ruler before it goes near skin.
  6. Unsure? Print two or three sizes and hold them against the client.

Step 1: Measure the placement

Measure on the actual spot, with the client holding it in its natural, relaxed position. Skin stretches when the body moves, and a measurement taken on a flexed arm won't match the relaxed one.

  • Use a soft tape measure (a sewing tape) and measure along the skin. Around a curve, the distance along the skin is longer than the straight line between the two points, and the stencil follows the skin.
  • Measure the space, then size the design. Note how much room there is, then decide how much of it the design should fill, leaving space around joints, bony edges and existing tattoos.
  • Mark it. A dot with a skin marker at each end of the space makes it easy to check the stencil against it later.
  • Take a photo with the tape in view if you're planning the design later, so you can size it without the client there.

Step 2: Pick the dimension that matters

A design keeps its proportions, so you set one dimension and the other follows. On a forearm or calf it's usually the length along the limb; across a chest or back it's usually the width. Lettering is sized by the height of its letters, since that decides whether it stays readable.

Detail needs room. Lines packed close together tend to blur into each other as a tattoo ages, so detailed designs such as portraits and fine linework need more size than bold, simple ones.

Step 3: Resize the design without losing quality

  • Keep the proportions locked. Scale the width and height together, or the design stretches.
  • Start from enough resolution. A sharp print needs roughly 200–300 pixels for every inch of stencil, so a 20 cm (8 in) design wants about 1,600–2,400 pixels across. Blowing up a small image gives soft, jagged lines.
  • Work at real size. In Procreate or Photoshop, set the canvas to the print size in centimetres or inches at 300 DPI before you scale the design, so the file and the paper agree.

Step 4: Print it at actual size

Most wrong-size stencils come from the print dialog, not the design. Look for "Fit to page", "Scale to fit", "Shrink oversized pages" or a scale below 100%, turn them off, and print at 100%.

  • Photo apps on phones often scale an image to fit the paper. A PDF made at the right size is the most reliable thing to print from.
  • Thermal printer apps differ. Check that yours prints at the size of the file, not stretched to the width of the paper.
  • Printers can't print to the very edge. If the design is close to the page size, leave about 1 cm of margin, or the edges get cut off.

Then check the print with a ruler. Testing on plain paper first saves stencil paper.

Step 5: Test it on the client

When the size isn't obvious, print the design at two or three sizes on plain paper, cut them out and hold them against the placement while the client looks in a mirror. It takes a minute, and it settles the question before the stencil goes on.

Sizing a stencil in Stencil AI

Stencil AI prints at real-world size. On the print screen, type the size on paper in centimetres or inches, or resize it against the on-screen ruler, and the stencil prints at exactly that size from the iPhone, iPad and Android app or the browser.

  • The size is the ink. The number you set is measured on the design's lines, not on the blank border around the image, so a 12 cm stencil measures 12 cm on the ruler.
  • Size copies. Add copies of the same stencil to the sheet, each at its own size, and test them all against the client from one print.
  • LiDAR measuring. On iPhones and iPads with LiDAR, point the camera at the placement, add two points, and use the result as the stencil's width or height. It measures the straight line between the points. That's right along a limb, but for a design that wraps around one, measure along the skin with a tape instead.
  • Paper checks. Choose A4, Letter, A3 or 11×17. If your printer doesn't support the paper size, the app warns you that the print would come out scaled.
  • A PDF for any printer. Share the stencil as a PDF that prints true to size at 100%.

A design bigger than one sheet can be split across several at the same size: see how to make a large tattoo stencil. For a placement that curves, the guide to curving a tattoo stencil covers bending the design before you print.

When the size comes out wrong

  • Too big or too small on paper: a scaling setting in the print dialog. Print at 100% and measure again.
  • Right on paper, wrong on the body: the placement was measured straight across a curve, or with the body flexed. Measure along the skin, relaxed.
  • Soft or jagged lines: the image was enlarged past its resolution. Start again from a sharper file.
  • Edges cut off: the design runs into the printer's margin. Leave about 1 cm free, or split it across sheets.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what size my tattoo stencil should be?

Measure the placement on the body with a soft tape measure while the client is relaxed, decide which dimension matters most, and size the design to it. If you're unsure, print two or three sizes on plain paper and hold them against the placement.

How do I resize a tattoo stencil?

Scale the design proportionally to the measured width or height, starting from a high-resolution file so the lines stay sharp, then print it at 100% scale. In Stencil AI you type the size in centimetres or inches and the stencil prints at exactly that size.

Why is my tattoo stencil printing the wrong size?

Almost always a scaling setting: "fit to page", "scale to fit" or "shrink oversized pages" in the print dialog. Turn it off, print at 100%, and check the first print with a ruler.

How do you measure for a tattoo?

With a soft tape measure along the skin, while the client holds that body part in its natural, relaxed position. Measure the length and width of the available space, mark the edges with a skin marker if needed, and leave some room around joints.

Print stencils at their actual size

Type the size in centimetres or inches, test a few sizes on one sheet, and print exactly what you measured.
